Tech at St. Patrick’s H.S.
Photography & ICT
The photography programs at St. Patrick’s are one of the highlights of our Information and Communication Technologies Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM). We offer classes to support it starting by introducing it to our grade 9 students in TIJ1O - Exploring Technologies, and students can continue forward pursuing an education in that pathway all the way through to our TGP4M - Photography and Digital Imaging course in grade 12, a course that ushers them off towards college and university pathways to start their careers in the imagery industry.
Construction
The construction offerings at St. Patrick’s H.S. are one of the areas we’re proudest of. We offer an introduction to the basics of tools, safety, standards, and a well-balanced introduction to the construction trades starting also in our TIJ1O course. Students are taught how to safely use hammers, drills, screwdrivers, saws, and a series of power tools and stations, to work with a variety of woods and materials and prepare not just for potentially a career, but for the basic repairs, renovations, and hobby projects that life will bring their way. This feeds into our TCJ2O course where students work with hardwoods to make their own charcuterie boards, they learn the basics of framing and drywall, and move on to furniture making with a Rich Summative Task (RST) which features them building and finishing coffee tables. All the while they are encouraged to learn the basics of teamwork in a trades environment, applied skills like measurement, and the techniques required to ensure the safest and most fulfilling environment possible.

From photography, video, and graphic design, through to construction, automotive technologies, the hospitalities, and hair styling, there is so much breadth and depth to the experiential education opportunities for students to dive into. We see meaningful connections flourishing year after year that come from very broad cultural and socioeconomic ranges, and we find it to be one of the best parts about the unique learning dynamic we offer. Students are always welcome to explore their own cultures and interests, and those of others, and we are happy to provide them with strong examples and supports from within and in our community to enable their unique learning experience.
SPECIALIST HIGH SKILLS MAJOR OPPORTUNITIES
As the Ministry of Education outlines, a Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) program is “a specialized program that allows students to gain credits toward their Ontario Secondary School Diploma and focus their learning on a specific economic sector at the same time.” Here at St. Patrick’s we have a variety of SHSM’s which offer students the opportunity to earn credits while also receiving specialized training which will serve them in their lives ahead. We bring experiential learning to new levels with our Co-Op placements which are meticulously tailored to be in line with their chosen industries, and offer supports through the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program where they can not only earn credits, but actually be paid while they learn, and further they can also receive college credits at the same time! We have successfully placed students at the Elite Skilled Trades Academy, a specialized SHSM program with OYAP where students study under red-seal tradespeople to come out of high school ready for their Level 1 trades testing with Algonquin College!
