A Cheap Way to Protect your Camera Lenses from Theft

Sure, you may be one of those fortunate few who have never lost any of your gear, but those of us who have can attest: it sucks balls.  Check out the video to see how easy it can happen.  Well leave it to dance and music photographer Rutger Geerling and his buddy Mark (the sound guy from DJ Tiesto) to come up with a simple and cheap 3D printer answer to the problem.  They developed a ring that wraps around the lens and blocks the lens release button, making it more difficult to remove.

Geerling noted to Petapixel:

It happens when you’re shooting with two cameras in the crowd. You use one camera and the unused one hangs around your shoulder. That’s when thieves go for it and quickly release and grab the lens in one motion. The problem is that the release button is basically to well designed. You can unlock and take off the camera in one swift motion with one hand.

Here's a graphical representation of what it looks like on the right.  Check out how it works in the video below.

The last thing anyone wants is to lose a lens, and the designs are free online, you can DOWNLOAD THE 3D PRINTER FILES HERE.  It should cost less than $1 to print it off, and the designers encourage you to adjust it to fit your lens.  If you have access to a printer give it a shot and let me know how it works for you!
